The Case For Amtrak Passenger Rail Connectivity in Hamilton

The Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has proudly served Hamilton and the surrounding region for over 114 years. As the trusted voice of over 700 businesses and organizations, we have consistently advocated for issues and opportunities that stimulate local growth and commerce. As President and CEO, I want to share why I believe adding Amtrak stations in Hamilton is a game-changer for our city.

Access and transportation are critical drivers of economic growth and tourism. Establishing Amtrak stations in Hamilton will significantly spur economic development by attracting business travelers and tourists to our city. These visitors will utilize our hotels and hospitality services, patronize our diverse array of small businesses, and contribute to the vibrancy and growth of Hamilton and its surrounding communities.

Our recent growth has positioned Hamilton as a prime destination for business travelers, tourists, and new residents. Enhanced connectivity through Amtrak will provide direct links to Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and open new opportunities with New York and Chicago. This influx of visitors would inject money into our economy, helping local businesses thrive and creating more jobs for residents. Spooky Nook Hamilton, the largest indoor sports complex in North America, already draws visitors from a three to five-hundred-mile radius regularly. Train travel would be a convenient option for families with sports equipment. Additionally, the convention center at Spooky Nook is increasingly being booked by major corporations for meetings and events. Think about how much easier these visitors could come to Hamilton with the option of convenient train travel. In 2026, AmHub at Knightsbridge is slated to open, marking a groundbreaking partnership between Butler Tech and Miami University. This advanced manufacturing and education hub will create a greater demand for business travel within the 3C’s, as well as to New York and Chicago. Adult students, high school students, and employees of major corporations will travel to Hamilton for training, recruitment, and access to advanced intellectual property uniquely available at this site. Amtrak stations would connect Hamilton directly to major cities like Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, New York, and Chicago. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, train travel offers an affordable, comfortable and stress-free alternative. Hamilton’s rapid growth over the past decade has outpaced other communities, and our strategies to fuel future growth are well in place.

Studies across the United States (including national research by one the Chamber interns) have shown that increased access, such as through airport expansions or passenger rail services, directly impacts economic development and quality of life positively. Amtrak passenger rail connectivity is vital for the anticipated growth of Hamilton and the region. Passenger rail is a necessity in larger metropolitan areas but is also a major opportunity here, opening Hamilton business and travel to additional economically beneficial markets. Adding Amtrak stations is not just about convenience; it is about securing a prosperous future for Hamilton. Even though we are in the early stages of the study and potential costs, I think we should embrace this opportunity and make Hamilton an even better place to live, work, and visit
